When What Worked… Stops Working

There is a particular kind of leader who has never really stopped moving. Not from lack of discipline. Because somewhere along the way, stopping started to feel like a liability.

They carry the answers. They stay close to the work. They hold the pace because that is what built the track record. And it worked.

The instincts that earn credibility at one level can quietly become the ceiling at the next. Not because something went wrong. Because the context shifted and the instinct didn't. It lingers beneath the surface, showing up in decisions that drag, teams that deliver but do not grow, that persistent sense of full effort without real movement.

Three beliefs tend to sit at the center of it.

  1. The answer is mine to carry. When having the answer becomes identity, letting others lead the thinking feels like a loss of standing. It is not. It is the shift from individual contribution to collective momentum, and it is one of the harder ones to make precisely because the old version kept getting rewarded.

  2. Certainty is required before I move. At senior levels, that kind of certainty rarely arrives. The leaders who navigate well have learned to move from conviction rather than from complete information. That is a different skill. It can be developed, but only if the waiting stops first.

  3. If I slow down, something will fall. This one runs deepest. It keeps leaders in reactive mode long after the environment is calling for something more considered. Presence is not the same as availability. The two get conflated more than most leaders realize.

None of these began as limitations. They were the very things that earned trust and built a track record. The question is not whether they made sense then. It is whether they still serve now.

The audit is not complicated. It asks one question of each belief that has been running quietly in the background: does this still serve the leader I am becoming, or the one I used to need to be?

This is the audit that leaders schedule last, and often the one that matters most.
